BlackVue DR900S-2CH First Look Review

The highly anticipated 4k BlackVue DR900S dash cam is now available! We’re very excited to be one of the first to test this latest technology in the world of dash cams. The DR900S is available in both one-channel and two-channel variants and both of them provide the next level of video quality and detail thanks to the brand new video sensor and higher resolution. The front unit is able to record at up to Ultra High Definition at 30FPS or Full HD 1080P at 60FPs, while the rear can record at Full HD1080P at 30FPS. This is a product for those that want the very best, including all the bells and whistles found in the top of the line products.

BlackVue DR900S

The front camera of the BlackVue DR900S utilizes an 8 megapixel CMOS sensor that’s able to capture in UHD 4k resolution (3840 x 2160). This dash cam is capable of recording twice the resolution of a traditional 1080P Full HD dash cam. With such high resolution, BlackVue needed to work on compression as well as making sure these files can fit on available microSD cards. Throughout the industry, H.264 video compression has been the norm. However, BlackVue is using the new H.265 standard to ensure file sizes are kept to a minimum with no deterioration to the video quality. H.265 encoding allows the footage to be about half the size of H.264 while providing a higher amount of detail in every clip (perfect for capturing those licence plates details).

Like the top of the line BlackVue models of the past, the DR900S has an abundance of features. The DR900S has built-in WiFi/smartphone app capabilities, utilizing both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz wireless bands for better transfer rates as well as the ability to connect to more hotspots than before. GPS is also built-in, allowing the camera to track both the vehicle’s location and speed of travel. The GPS works in conjunction with the dash cam’s G-sensors to enable parking mode recording as long as there’s power to the camera. With the use of either a Power Magic Pro or a dash cam battery (such as the Cellink NEO or BlackVue’s very own B-124), parking-mode recording duration can last up to 15 hours for a dual channel setup and 25 hours for a single channel setup.

Just like before, BlackVue has kept and improved on its BlackVue Over the Cloud feature. This feature is perfect for fleet managers or customers who want around the clock access and protection for their vehicles. Sending notifications to the user’s smartphone as well as allowing the user to view footage from the dash cam remotely are all fully capable with the DR900S. Also when using Cloud, video footage can be backed up and a live video feed is available, adding to the security that a dash cam can provide. What’s even more impressive is that this Cloud feature allows the dash cam to automatically upload event files (recordings triggered by the impact that are picked up by the dash cam’s G-sensor) to the Cloud, so that an even a higher chance of capturing incidents is possible.

BlackVue DR900S-2CH Sample Footage

The sample footage above is from the DR9000S-2CH during our initial testing. The dash cam is able to capture an incredible amount of details, and especially off to the sides. While the rear camera remains at 1080P, it still is one of the best in the market. We are also confident that BlackVue will make improvements on the quality of this dash cam over time as they did with their previous models through firmware upgrades, etc.

Although this is just our initial test of the DR900S, we already feel that it is a big step up from the DR750S of the past. For those who want the latest and greatest, there's no doubt the DR900S should be on the top of your shopping list.
